Surf News

If your tired of scouring websites and magazines for the latest surfing news and gossip, look no further. The boys at secretspot will periodically be running a surfing news update, bringing you the latest and greatest surfing stories in a quick and concise manner. We've searched the websites and mags to bring you the very latest up to date surfing news...

Number one on our list is 'Surfer knocked unconscious by whale's tail'. Yes it appear our Aussie cousins have been getting a little frisky with the local sea life, resulting in one bold kook being given a firm "NO" by a humpback whale near Bondi Beach. Bishan Rajapakse was enjoying a surf when a 15m whale flicked him into the ocean. We can only hope he bought her dinner before.

Julian Wilson recently made the headlines in the surfing stratosphere this month, besting Jordy Smith in a high scoring final for the Mr Price Pro 2013 championship in South Africa. Ballito delivered the goods, and both young chargers provided the watching crowd with some incredible surfing talent. Wilson performed a perfect 10 aerial to cinch the win, leaving Smith in a distant second place.

The Portugese town of Peniche, known best for it's dominating beach break and hosting of the Rip Curl Pro, has confirmed that it will be building a wave pool in the near future. It will be installed at a theme park only 500m away from the surf break, and seeks to extend the limited season to further cement Portugal's reputation as the home of European surfing.

Rahtu and Alik dominate Padang Padang trials, main event is imminent.

Local Kuta beach charger Rahtu Suargita and Uluwatu legend Alik Rudiarta demonstrated the best of Bali surfing talent recently, commanding an emphatic victory over a field of 16 of Bali's most talented young surfers. Securing first and second place, the two locals earned their place in the main event and the chance to compete for $10,000 in prize money.

The contest kicked off in typical Padang style, with a powerful new swell pouring into the reef on Sunday morning. Solid 5ft tubes thundered throughout the day, with the local chargers getting bazzed on a regular basis. This was fast and heavy surfing as only Padang can deliver. Eventually the talent was whittled down to just two, with Rahtu taking first place after smashing a pair of deep barrells across the inside section. Alik also surfed exceptionally well, claiming second place after writhing his way through a set of deep backhand tubes.

Both finalists were crowned upon the giant podium that sits on Padang Padang's beach while cheered on by a massive crowed of mixed locals and surf fans. Indo really showed up to support their home boys at this contest, a great indication of the tight knit surfing community which exists here. The opening cermemony was celebrated through the traditional Balinese dance known as the Kecack, to ask the God's for permission to hold the contest at this sacred spot. A fantastic mix of surfing ability and culture, we're only hoping for more of the same when the main event comes to town.
